And not only do these brush-on powder formulas offer protection against the sun's harmful rays, but they are also specifically designed to work with your makeup, making reapplying a cinch rather than an annoyance. Think of it as your favorite setting powder mixed with UV blockers. "In fact, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide exist naturally as powders, so instead of putting these particles in a lotion, cream, or spray base, they are allowed to exist in their natural form." "Powder sunscreen is no different, ingredient-wise, than a mineral-based sunscreen," explains Christina Lee Chung, M.D. We totally understand not wanting to slather on some creamy SPF on top of your foundation (yuck), but that's where powder sunscreen comes in. It's easy to forget once you've applied your initial layer, or there's the fact that it simply feels like a bit of a nuisance post-makeup application. These are the best sunscreens to stock up all year round. While being good about applying sunscreen the first time around is one thing, it's the reapplication that's the kicker. The good news is there are plenty of physical body, face, and even tinted sunscreens out there that don’t feel heavy or leave a substantial white cast. Whichever you choose, SPF is a nonnegotiable in your skin care routine for providing broad-spectrum protection (meaning it blocks both UVA and UVB rays) against sun exposure, which can protect against skin cancer and early signs of aging. ![]() Whenever possible, Carmen Castilla, MD, an NYC board-certified dermatologist, prefers physical sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide: “A combination of these two active SPF ingredients yields broader UV protection encompassing more of the UVA and UVB spectrum than the chemical sunscreens.” Since mineral SPF doesn’t get absorbed by your skin, it’s less likely to clog pores and tends to be gentler on sensitive skin than chemical sunscreen. She also recommends physical sunscreens for those with acne-prone or sensitive skin. Markowitz prefers mineral-based sunscreens since they are immediately effective against the sun’s rays (most chemical sunscreens take about 20 to 30 minutes to start working) and tend to need less reapplication. In contrast, chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays and converting them to heat, which is then released by the skin.” Do dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreen?įor the most part, Dr. ![]() “The minerals sit on your skin’s surface and act like microscopic mirrors to reflect harmful rays. “Mineral sunscreen is a type of sunscreen that is formulated with the minerals zinc oxide or titanium oxide-or sometimes both-as the active ingredient that provides UV protection,” says Orit Markowitz, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of OptiSkin Dermatology in New York City.

![]() You can join a Fleet of like-minded players, but the main story missions cast you as the protagonist in an ongoing story. Speaking of multiplayer, Star Trek Online is a very solo experience, for better or worse. Upgrading your equipment and dispatching adversaries faster feels satisfying, but there's not a ton of depth until you get to late-game multiplayer content. Ground combat is similarly straightforward: Keep an eye on your shields and health while shooting enemies and coordinating your party members.Įither way, the game throws a lot of enemies your way. I wish I had more to say about them, but they basically just work.ĭuring spacefaring encounters, you'll have to keep an eye on your shields and your positioning, using special skills to boost your attack and defense while maneuvering your ship through enemy fire. You'll spend about half your time in space, plotting courses and engaging other ships in battle, and half the time on the ground, exploring somewhat repetitive levels and trading phaser fire with enemy soldiers.īoth ground and space combat are competent. Star WarsĪs far as gameplay itself goes, Star Trek Online is actually pretty simple once you get past the myriad systems. To the game's credit, Star Trek Online doesn't lock free players out of any important content they can still experience the entire story with full access to whatever equipment they find. As a free-to-play game, Star Trek Online offers a premium currency known as Zen in order to get fancy outfits and ship skins. This lack of transparency also affects the game's micro transactions, for better or worse. They're surprisingly simple once you figure them out, though. Some key processes, such as procuring new ships and assigning secondary combat skills (like throwing grenades, for my tactically minded officer) require a lot of trial and error. The game doesn't tell you how to do this until you're more than a dozen missions in, nor does it mention that the skills you map to the face buttons can't autofire at all. One of the big advantages of having the game on consoles, for example, is the ability to program skills to autofire, since there aren't enough buttons on a console to have them all accessible at once. But there's a lot to remember, and I have to wonder whether some of it could have been streamlined. The Arc’teryx Fission SV Gloves earned these ratings: Evo (3.6/5), REI (4/5), Backcountry (4/5), Gear Institute (84%), Outdoor Gear Lab (Editor's Choice, 89/100), Switchback Travel (Best of the Rest Glove). If you have the budget to upgrade, then the Arc’teryx Fission SV Gloves are for you because of their highest-quality materials (PrimaLoft Silver and Gold insulation, additional OctaLoft breathable and wicking insulation, Fortius™ 1.0 softshell material for flexibility, double-layer goat leather palms for increased durability, and the top-ranking water-proof/breathable Gore-tex) and Arc’teryx’s incredible warranty program. This is the warmest glove in our guide (except for heated gloves, which get a boost from a rechargeable battery pack-see below).Īrc’teryx is a company known for its quality, so it’s no wonder that these leather gloves come as highly recommended as they do with that kind of price tag. The Fission is also one of our favorites in our Best Ski Gloves guide because of its warmth-it’s great for sub-zero skiing, as well as sub-zero winter hiking, snowshoeing, mountaineering, cutting your Christmas tree, or shoveling snow in a Nor’Easter. With an additional waterproof Gore-Tex insert, a supple goat leather palm, and a hearty gauntlet, this is one heck of a glove to take on winter. This was also helpful while lacing up winter boots, an especially dreaded task in the morning. These gloves were meant to be as dexterous as they are warm, because what’s the point of gloves if you can’t use your hands? We found this especially useful for setting up a 4-Season Tent, where stakes and guylines require fingers that can move. The soft lining also wicks away moisture to make sure your digits stay dry. The Etips tend to run large, so consult the sizing chart before you buy! They easily fit in the pocket of our running hydration vest as well as in some of our smaller hiking fanny packs.Ī close runner-up was the Ozero Thermal -30☏ Suede Winter Gloves, but many reviews said that they were overkill for all but the coldest hikes, and they were often too bulky to be comfortable while running. They’re lightweight and compressible, so we think they work well for backpacking, running, cycling, where space may be at a premium. We also like the zipper, which makes it easier to look at our hiking watch or running watch, which is often a challenge with most winter gloves. That’s a better option if your gloves must be windproof and waterproof.īut for most uses and most winter scenarios, the North Face E-Tip Denali are a lightweight and packable option that gives the warmth you need. One thing we like is since they are made from inherently breathable materials, these gloves do best in colder temperatures when used during high-output activities (such as running or hiking).Īll five fingers are touchscreen compatible-the touchscreen conductivity is woven into the gloves, so rather than sporting obvious finger pads, they look like normal gloves.Īs fleece-like gloves, they aren’t what we’d recommend for extreme cold-see our Upgrade Extreme Cold winner for a better option. My experience editing The Upshaws led me to my next show, History of the World, Part II. History of the World Part 2 | Trailer | Hulu youtu.be I enjoyed the challenge of landing the jokes with the proper takes and reactions while artfully weaving in the laughter. The editorial style of The Upshaws is a hybrid of the two: we have the element of the studio audience, however, our showrunners prefer that the edits are on the tighter side, which is a different take on this format. Single Camera comedy, however, is usually edited in a much tighter manner, with jokes layered on top of each other. Multi-camera sitcoms are shot on a soundstage with a studio audience and because they have a laugh track, the editorial style is much like stand-up comedy in the sense that the show is cut fat with room for the laughter to play out and time for the characters to take the laughter in.
